The Expendables is an upcoming ensemble  action film written by David Callaham  and Sylvester Stallone, and directed by Stallone. Filming began on March 28, 2009, in Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans, and Los Angeles and is expected to be released on August 13, 2010.[1]  The film pays tribute to the blockbuster action films of the 1980s and early ’90s, and stars an array of action veterans from those decades (such as Stallone himself, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet Li, Bruce Willis and Mickey Rourke) as well as more recent action stars such as Jason Statham and Steve Austin.

Plot

After years of unspeakable corruption that concludes with tragedies such as the murder of American hostages and betrayal of foreign policies, and finally recognizing a way out of this terrible mess, the U.S. along with other nations, equally seeking the end of this catastrophe, secretly put together a squad of its highest trained military personnel finally to overthrow the dictator who has caused devastation in South America for over 20 years. The team sets out on its mission to complete the assassination, but with little help from the nations as they try to keep the mission secret. After they realize that there will be no outside help, they rely on their own resources to fight not only the dictator’s army but also the governments that set them up because on one of their reconnaissance mission to the small island country of Vilena, Barney and Christmas learn their real enemy is a rogue ex-CIA operative James Monroe (Eric Roberts) and his henchman Paine (Steve Austin). They’re forced to leave their naturally female contact, Sandra (Giselle Itie) behind, and Barney convinces his team to go in after her. It looks like Stallone then strikes a nice balance of balls-to-the-wall retro and contemporary action.

* Sylvester Stallone as Barney “The Schizo” Ross, a paramilitary veteran and leader of the team. Originally called Frank the Repairman (was going to be tribute to his Las Vegas Character)
* Jason Statham as Lee Christmas, second in command of the team. He is a former SAS soldier and expert at Close Quarters Combat using knives.
* Jet Li as Bao Thao, a Vietnamese expert at hand-to-hand combat.
* Dolph Lundgren as Gunnar Jensen, a Swedish sniper. Jensen hates Bao Thao and fights with him frequently.
* Terry Crews as Hale Caesar, Thao’s best friend and a weapons specialist.
* Randy Couture as Toll Road, demolitions expert.
* Mickey Rourke as Tool, a former Expendable, now an arms dealer and tattoo parlor artist/owner.
* Gisele Itié as Sandra, a young native woman.
* Charisma Carpenter as Lacy, Lee Christmas’ fiancee.
* Lauren Jones as Cheyenne, Tool’s love interest.
* Nick Searcy as Agent Will Sands, a CIA agent who helps the Expendables.
* Bruce Willis as Mr. Church, the man who hires the Expendables.
* Arnold Schwarzenegger as Trench, an old rival of Ross.
