Kahekili was a ali’i who was looked at as a god and he was tattooed by Kanehekili to be god like, so therefore had the tattoo on the right side. It goes along with Hawaiian thought. His designs were reflective of his position with the ho’aka on his head. The Pahupu were made up of the Pahupahu and were the only regiment that was taken over by Kamehameha after the death of Kahekili.
I question the accuracy of some of Keoni’s comments based on the following passage by Hawaiian historian Samuel Kamakau from Ku’oko’a.
“Because of the manner in which Känehekili was known in ancient times, a dark, purple-black along one side, that was the reason that the King of Maui, Kahekili, was tattooed black from head to foot along his RIGHT SIDE, and his chiefly war leaders and royal court members, called, Pahupü, were the päele of Kahekili.
